{"id":3072,"date":"2015-10-29T14:08:04","date_gmt":"2015-10-29T19:08:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/greenheartclub.staging.wpengine.com\/?p=3072"},"modified":"2018-09-16T17:50:27","modified_gmt":"2018-09-16T22:50:27","slug":"climate-change-its-effect-on-global-health-and-wellness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/greenheart.org\/blog\/greenheart-international\/climate-change-its-effect-on-global-health-and-wellness\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate Change: Its Effect on Global Health and Wellness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Kelsey Holmes, Greenheart Club Intern<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This year marks the fifteenth year of the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals and the target date set by the UN for reaching them.\u00a0 After huge strides were made in improving health and wellness for people around the world, global leaders are in the process of creating and finalizing a new set of objectives for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/index.html\">global sustainable development<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to IntraHealth International senior editor, Margarite Nathe, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/topics\">17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/a> \u201ccould unite countries on the path toward one of the international community\u2019s most ambitious goals: universal health coverage.\u201d\u00a0 While all of the issues laid out by the SDGs are important and pressing \u2013 such as the goal to \u201cend poverty in all its forms everywhere\u201d \u2013 one of the most vital issues facing global health and wellness is the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/climatechange\/news\/\">climate crisis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3073\" style=\"width: 514px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/greenheartclub.staging.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/ecological-basis-b.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3073\" class=\"wp-image-3073 \" title=\"Photo courtesy of \u00a9 Natural Resources Defense Council\" src=\"http:\/\/greenheartclub.staging.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/ecological-basis-b.jpg\" alt=\"Photo courtesy of \u00a9 Natural Resources Defense Council\" width=\"504\" height=\"627\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3073\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo courtesy of \u00a9 Natural Resources Defense Council<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/climatechange\/summit\/\">United Nation\u2019s 2014 Climate Summit<\/a> states \u201cClimate change is not a far-off problem, it is happening now, with real consequences.\u201d\u00a0 The UN has divided the issue into eight Action Areas: Agriculture, Cities, Energy, Financing, Forests, Industry, Resilience and Transportation.<\/p>\n<p>As the world\u2019s population continues to grow, the issues surrounding global warming, pollution, and consumption will remain at the forefront of global health issues.\u00a0 One way to make sure that you\u2019re doing your part is by paying attention to what you consume.\u00a0 Use this <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/footprint.wwf.org.uk\/\">footprint calculator<\/a> to see how big your environmental footprint is and learn where you have room for improvement.\u00a0 If you want to go a step further, check out these organizations that offer ways to get involved and start making a difference!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/\">Natural Resources Defense Council<\/a>: \u201cThe Natural Resources Defense Council&#8217;s purpose is to safeguard the Earth: its people, its plants and animals and the natural systems on which all life\u00a0depends.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/350.org\/\">350.org<\/a>: \u201c350.org is building a global grassroots movement to solve the climate crisis.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeacefund.org\/\">Greenpeace<\/a>: \u201cGreenpeace is the leading independent campaigning organization that uses peaceful protest and creative communication to expose global environmental problems\u00a0and to promote solutions that are essential to a green and peaceful future.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What are some ways you\u2019ve taken action on these issues?
